Los Angeles Food Policy Council

Alba Velasquez (she/her)

“Driven by my personal experiences, I am impassioned to advocate for healthier lifestyles by transforming the environment and implementing policies that facilitate easier access to nutritious food options for historically disenfranchised communities.”

The Los Angeles Food Policy Council is working to revolutionize the LA food system, advocating for equitable access to healthy, affordable, and sustainable food for all residents. Through robust policy advocacy, fostering community partnerships, and mobilizing resources, the council aims to combat systemic food inequities, ultimately envisioning an LA County where nutritious, affordable, and culturally diverse food is a right, not a privilege, leading to thriving communities and enhanced overall well-being.

Alba Velasquez, the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Food Policy Council (LAFPC), brings nearly 6 years of dedicated service to the organization. Initially joining LAFPC as the Program Director in 2017, she has played a pivotal role in leading the Healthy Neighborhood Market Network program, enhancing program implementation, and ensuring effective financial oversight. Alba holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Master's degree in Urban Regional Planning from UCLA.

As a Salvadoran immigrant who grew up in a low-income community, Alba's personal experiences have ignited her commitment to food equity. These experiences have provided her with an understanding of the complex challenges faced by vulnerable communities. Alba's dedication to promoting food justice and addressing the complexities of inequality drives her work, ensuring that underprivileged populations have access to healthy and sustainable food systems.
