Petrona’s purpose in life is to foster spaces of joy and liberation. She was born and raised in Historic South Central Los Angeles and is of Chuj and Q’anjob’al Maya descent. Her lived experiences guide her advocacy for a more equitable, inclusive, and liberated Los Angeles. She brings a diverse range of experiences to the team from college access to cultural programming to social justice activism.
Petrona comes from Kid City Hope Place, where she supported first-generation students of color through mentorship, college and youth enrichment activities. She led Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) cohorts where students embarked on self reflective journeys to learn about themselves, social justice movements, and research methodologies. Petrona graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a double major in Feminist Studies and Sociology with a Black Studies minor. At UCSB, she co-founded the Collective of Pueblos Originarios in Diaspora (CPOD) to cultivate community and visibility for Indigenous college students from Latin America.
