“Through personal loss, I have turned to archives in search of my own story and history and found the overt silencing of our communities in the archives.”

Color Compton centers the importance of Black and Brown archives to highlight the importance of narratives, power, agency, and our collective understanding of history. Introducing this to young people in our community ensures that we are cultivating future art abolitionist, community leaders, and history makers.

Abigail Lopez-Byrd is the founder and Executive Director of Color Compton, an educator, and visual artist originally from Compton. Abigail received her B.A. in Art from the University of California Santa Cruz. She also received her Master Degree from Columbia University and is currently a PhD student at the University of California, Riverside. Outside of being an educator, scholar, and artist, Abigail is a proud mother of three beautiful girls and continues to produce work exploring themes of identity, community, family, loss, grief, and ideas of blackness and brownness.
