SITE SUPERVISOR

Eric Ares (he/him)

Director of Housing and Homelessness Policy

Eric Ares serves as Housing and Homelessness Director for Los Angeles City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez. Prior to this he was the Sr. Manager of Strategy and Systems Change at the United Way of Greater Los Angeles - and before that the Deputy Director with the Los Angeles Community Action Network, where he worked alongside low-income and homeless leaders in the Skid Row community to promote equity and racial justice through organizing, civic participation, and public policy.

He has over 20 years of experience working with public, philanthropic, service, and movement building partners to create permanent solutions to homelessness and poverty. He was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles and currently resides in the same home his family has lived in for over 75 years.

When he’s not working he enjoys unironically cheering for the LA Clippers and losing to his daughter at Mario Kart.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Los Angeles City Council District 1 is represented by Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez. As a lifelong District 1 resident born and raised in Highland Park, Eunisses has led campaigns, coalitions, and commissions that have transformed local and statewide policy. Since taking office in December 2022, she has prioritized a Care First agenda focused on creating access to community-based services, housing, and support for all Angelenos.

CD1 is socioeconomically and racially diverse, representing core parts of northeast and northwest Los Angeles. It includes Glassell Park, Highland Park, Chinatown, Mount Washington, Echo Park, Elysian Park, Westlake, Pico Union, Koreatown, Angelino Heights, Lincoln Heights, and MacArthur Park.

The CD1 Housing and Homelessness Fellow will play a critical role in our work to serve CD1 residents who are currently experiencing homelessness, at-risk of losing their home, and/or formerly unhoused. Working alongside the Housing and Homelessness Team, the Field Team, the Community Advocacy Team, and the Legislative Team, the fellow will help implement our vision of addressing the immediate needs of people experiencing homelessness and their long-term housing needs while working to create the policy and structural changes necessary to end homelessness at scale in LA. As such, this cross-sectional role will have a dynamic set of responsibilities that will include working directly with unhoused people in the field, coordinating services and housing efforts with City and County departments, engaging precariously housed tenants to ensure they can stay in their homes, and collaborating on policy and system solutions at a city-wide level.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Engaging and supporting formerly unhoused people living in permanent supportive housing or other housing to ensure they are receiving the support they need.

  • Coordinating our programs and protocols for people currently living in vehicles or in encampments in our district

  • Educating and advocating for precariously housed CD1 residents so they are able to stay in their homes and avoid falling into homelessness

  • Collaborating with LAHSA, County and City departments, and service providers to ensure we are successfully getting people from the streets into permanent homes

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and enthusiasm about Councilmember Hernandez’s policies, priorities and values

  • Diligence, high ethical standards, focus, flexibility, a capacity for hard work, and a willingness to work closely with multiple team members.

  • Compassion, commitment to, and enthusiasm for addressing the concerns and needs of CD1 constituents.

  • Deep knowledge of and ties to District 1 is encouraged.

  • Must be a team player.
