Healing Justice and Wellness in Social Justice Movements
Dr. Melina Abdullah will lead us in an exploration of healing justice and wellness in social justice movements. She will detail practices that have been useful in sustaining ourselves, calls for community care (vis-à-vis self care), a discussion of how to avoid and challenge “selfish” care, with a grounding in womanist praxis and Black women’s wisdoms.
Dr. Abdullah is the co-founder of the Los Angeles Chapter of Black Lives Matter and chair of the Department of Pan-African Studies at California State University, Los Angeles. She is a recognized expert on race, gender, class, and social movements. Abdullah is the author of numerous scholarly articles and book chapters, with subjects ranging from political coalition building to womanist mothering. Read her full bio here.
SJPLA’s Wellbeing Series is a free workshop every third Thursday of the month at 11 am. The workshops introduce a variety of healing modalities to anyone working to end homelessness in Los Angeles, as part of our Racial Equity in Homelessness Initiative. These sessions promote personal rest, renewal, and connection creating space for discussion on how to sustain wellbeing practices.
