Wellbeing Series: Pranayama Tools for Anxiety with Melissa Shah

In this workshop, participants will learn about how anxiety impacts the body and mind from a yogic and Ayurvedic lens, and will learn how to use the breath to nurture the process of letting go.

They will experience three different pranayama (breathing) practices that will

  1. Support the reduction of anxiety on a physical, mental and emotional level

  2. Allow their body and mind to replete and recover.

Melissa (she/they) is an Indian-American yoga therapist who skillfully adapts yoga and Ayurveda to the individual. She holds over 2,000 hours of study, and believes that yoga doesn't need to be stripped of its culture and history in order for it to be palatable and beneficial to others. She is dedicated to the intersection of yoga and social justice, and works to make being well accessible to all, but especially those who are often left out of the wellness conversation. She offers 1:1 yoga therapy, mentorships for yoga teachers, and group classes focused on underrepresented yogic tools like pranayama. Melissa also leads immersion courses and retreats for teachers, students, and businesses looking to practice holistically and with respect for the source culture.

SJPLA’s Wellbeing Series is a free workshop every second Thursday of the month at 11 am. The workshops introduce a variety of healing modalities as part of our Racial Equity in Homelessness Initiative. These sessions promote personal rest, renewal, and connection creating space for discussion on how to sustain wellbeing practices.
