Over nine months, the cohort model supports nonprofit leaders with lived experience as they hone their systems change strategy, explore liberatory team culture practices, amplify messaging, and expand their relationships and resources. SJPLA has found that supporting these foundational elements accelerates an organization’s ability to create systemic community impact.
Overview
How it works
The Systems Change Fellowship supports LA-based nonprofit initiatives led by those with lived experience of the systemic issues they’re tackling.
The program focuses on peer-learning and relationship-building, connecting as a part of the interwoven landscape of social justice in Los Angeles. Our cohort members tackle a wide range of interconnected systemic issues through policy advocacy, narrative and culture shift, and building power.
The 2024-25 cohort will present their stories at SJPLA’s 2025 Fast Pitch, pitching their work to hundreds of guests to raise support. Fast Pitch comes at the end of a ten-week training process supported by SJPLA coaches.
Monthly convenings run from September to May.
For more details, join our Information Session on May 2nd.
Each cohort member is offered:
A $10,000 unrestricted grant, plus more raised through the SJPLA network.
Pro-bono coaching, and peer support.
SJPLA's signature Fast Pitch training with a professionally filmed pitch video and a platform at our annual Fast Pitch event.
Expanded network of supporters, including funders, donors, and nonprofit leaders.
Increased exposure through SJPLA's network, including the annual Fast Pitch Event attracting hundreds of attendees.
Being an important part of the SJPLA community after their program ends. We continue to be a touchstone and support for alumni from years past.
Eligibility Requirements
The below criteria must be met to be eligible for the Systems Change Fellowship:
Nonprofit Organization
Applicants must have a designation from the IRS as a 501(c)3 organization, or proof of fiscal sponsorship.
Early Stage Endeavors
The organization or initiative must be in the early stages of growth and development but must have some proof of concept. Larger, established organizations may apply to the program only if their participation in the Systems Change Fellowship would focus on a new, systems-change initiative being developed or implemented by their organization.
Organization Size, Years in Operation
There are no restrictions on size of organizational budget, staffing, or years in operation.
Location
We have a strong preference for LA-based organizations. If you’re part of a national organization or are headquartered elsewhere, you are still invited to apply. Tell us how your program significantly impacts LA County.
Systems Change Focus
The initiative must have a systems change focus, rather than a direct service focus. Direct services often provide much-needed individual-level support, such as temporary or permanent housing, mentoring, training, or food banks. For the focus of this fellowship, we seek leaders of systems change initiatives that address the root causes of injustice in order to permanently improve the lives of the people most impacted by the issue, in turn benefitting all. As distinct from direct service work, systems change initiatives recognize the problem’s complex history and seek to transform the system often by policy change, community organizing, and campaigns to shift how we think about the issue.
Organization Representative
The individual participating in the Systems Change Fellowship on behalf of their organization must hold the title of Executive Director, initiative Program Director, or equivalent position with significant organization-wide decision-making responsibility and should have at least six months of tenure with the organization. Participants should work or live in LA County in order to utilize the coaching resources available
Lived experience
The individual participating in the Systems Change Fellowship should have direct, lived experience of the issue their initiative is tackling. As the Systems Change Fellowship is not issue specific, we look to applicants to define and tell us their relationship to the system they seek to transform. For example, we define “direct, lived experience of homelessness” as someone who has been unhoused, unsheltered, or who may have experienced a lack of stable, safe, and adequate housing

Background
The 2024-25 Systems Change Fellowship will be SJPLA’s seventh cohort. To date, 47 leaders have gone through the nine-month program.
We invest in and amplify systems change initiatives working to dismantle oppressive systems and create a liberatory Los Angeles. Systems change work addresses the root causes of pressing social problems, creating change in underlying inequitable structures by shifting policies, processes, resources, and power structures.
We recognize that social justice work is interdependent and interconnected; too often, the work is siloed. The Systems Change Fellowship aims to foster connections between initiatives dismantling and rebuilding structures that serve all Angelenos.
Application Process
SJPLA appreciates the time, resources, and energy nonprofit initiatives expend in submitting applications for programs and funding. We have simplified the application process to reduce the written requirement, incorporating interactive components to inform our selection process as a part of our commitment to proximate grantmaking.
Selection for SJPLA’s Systems Change Accelerator is a 3 stage process:

Application Timeline
Eligibility Questionnaire
The applicant should complete the Eligibility Questionnaire. The applicant is the person who would represent their organization in the Systems Change Fellowship. We’ve typically found this to be the Executive Director, Program Director, or an equivalent position with significant organization-wise decision-making responsibility and at least six months tenure with the organization. The questionnaire should take about 20 minutes to complete.
Download a PDF of the questions so you can prepare responses in advance.

FAQs

We define systems change as work that addresses the root causes of injustice to permanently improve the lives of the people most impacted by the issue, in turn benefitting all. As distinct from direct service work, systems change initiatives recognize the problem’s complex history and seek to transform the system often by policy change, community organizing, and campaigns to shift how we think about the issue. By contrast, direct services often provide much-needed individual-level support, such as temporary or permanent housing, mentoring, training, or food banks.
Direct Service treats the problem’s symptoms. Systems Change addresses underlying core causes of the problem.
Direct Service alleviates immediate needs. Systems Change Eradicates the problem permanently.
Direct Service serves individuals or groups one at a time. Systems Change impacts a broader community all at once.
Direct Service results are seen in a shorter, defined time frame. Systems Change results are seen over a long, undefined time frame.
Direct Service relief relies on an individual continuing to utilize the organization’s service. Systems Change creates community shifts that will cause the organization’s service to be unneeded over time.
Examples of Direct Service: Temporary or permanent housing, food banks, mentoring, training, counseling.
Examples of Systems Change: policy change, community organizing, campaigns to shift public perception.
Our systems change definition is inspired in part by FSG’s “The Water of Systems Change” and Marina Kim’s “Rethinking the Impact Spectrum”.

Unfortunately, only IRS-designated 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations, or initiatives with a fiscal sponsor are eligible to apply for the Systems Change Fellowship. If you are a 501(c)3 nonprofit entity, ensure that you have a Letter of Determination from the IRS affirming your organization’s tax-exempt status. Learn more at the IRS website.
If you’d like to learn more about fiscal sponsorship, visit the National Council of Nonprofits.

SJPLA will review all Eligibility Questionnaire submissions, and invite only eligible candidates to attend an applicant workshop.
The applicant workshop will be offered virtually on two dates: Thursday, June 13th, 10am-1pm or Monday, June 17th, 11am-2pm. Invited candidates will be required to attend only one.
We acknowledge the time, resources, and effort that nonprofit organizations invest in completing funding applications. Our intention is to reduce written barriers to applying for the program, to honor the investment of time and resources that nonprofits expend seeking funding, and to offer a value-add component to the Systems Change Fellowship application process.
The applicant workshop is hands-on and interactive. It’s an opportunity for candidates and SJPLA to get to know each other, to get a deeper understanding of the systemic change candidates seek to create, and to determine whether the program will be a fit for both sides of this partnership.
Candidates will engage in collaborative exercises, walking away with tangible tools to help clarify the problem they’re tackling and their solution. After the workshops, SJPLA will invite up to 10 candidates to join the Systems Change Fellowship.
